Discover the Magic of Fall in Gulf Shores: 7 Reasons to Visit This Autumn
When most people picture a Gulf Shores vacation, they think summer. But those who visit the Alabama Gulf Coast in the fall discover something a little different: the same beautiful beaches with a slower, more relaxed pace.
Warm days, beautiful sunsets, fewer peak-summer crowds, outdoor adventures and some of the area's best events make September, October and November a fantastic time to escape to the coast.
Here are seven reasons we think you might fall in love with Gulf Shores in the fall.
1. Enjoy the Beach Without the Summer Rush
The beach doesn't disappear when summer vacation ends.
Fall can bring plenty of beautiful days for putting your toes in the sand, walking the shoreline, reading by the water or simply sitting back and listening to the waves.
And with the busiest summer travel season behind you, the whole experience can feel a little more laid-back.
Pack the chairs. Bring a book. Let the kids play in the sand.
Sometimes having nowhere you need to be is exactly what vacation is supposed to feel like.
2. Explore Gulf State Park
Fall is a great time to discover that there's much more to Gulf Shores than its beaches.
Head to Gulf State Park and explore the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system, which winds through several different coastal ecosystems.
Walk it, rent bikes or simply choose a section to explore with the family.
Along the way, keep an eye out for birds, turtles, deer and other wildlife. You may even spot an alligator—but always observe wildlife from a safe distance and never feed or approach it.
It's an easy way to add a little adventure to a beach vacation.
3. Experience the National Shrimp Festival
If you're visiting in October, this is the big one.
The Annual National Shrimp Festival returns to Gulf Shores October 8–11, 2026, bringing food, live music, arts and crafts, vendors and plenty of Gulf Coast atmosphere to the beachfront.
And yes, there's shrimp.
Lots of shrimp.
The festival has become a Gulf Shores tradition and is one of the best reasons to plan an October trip—especially if you like the idea of combining a beach getaway with one of the area's signature events.
4. Discover Somewhere New to Eat
We love returning to our favorite Gulf Shores restaurants, but part of the fun of vacation is finding somewhere new.
One newer option is Tap & Still, located at 807 Gulf Shores Parkway.
The lagoon-front restaurant offers build-your-own burgers, sandwiches and hot dogs along with wings, chicken tenders, fries and drinks.
It's a fun, casual option when the family wants a break from seafood—or when you've already eaten enough shrimp to last until next year's vacation.
Our advice: don't plan every single meal before you arrive. Leave one lunch or dinner open and try somewhere you've never been.
You may discover your family's newest Gulf Shores tradition.
5. Watch an Alabama Gulf Coast Sunset
Some of the best vacation experiences don't require a reservation or an admission ticket.
Before sunset, grab your chairs and head toward the water.
Then stay awhile.
Watch the sky change colors, listen to the waves and enjoy the fact that nobody needs to be anywhere else.
We spend so much of our vacations trying to make sure we do everything that it's easy to forget to simply enjoy where we are.
A Gulf Shores sunset is a pretty good reminder.
6. Take a Day Trip to Orange Beach
You don't have to choose between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach—you can enjoy both.
Spend an afternoon exploring Orange Beach, book a dolphin cruise, visit The Wharf, browse the shops or grab dinner overlooking the water.
The Wharf also hosts events throughout the year, so it's worth checking its calendar before your trip to see what's happening while you're in town.
Then head back to Gulf Shores for a quieter end to the evening.
7. Slow Down at The Blue Mermaid
One of our favorite things about fall is that it encourages you to slow down a little.
And your vacation home should give you somewhere to do exactly that.
The Blue Mermaid, our five-bedroom, three-bath Gulf Shores vacation home, gives families plenty of room to spread out while keeping the beach close.
You'll have access to a private beach walk, two community pools, tennis and pickleball, plus a fenced backyard and fire pit back at the house.
And yes—The Blue Mermaid is pet-friendly, so even your four-legged family members can come along for the adventure.
Spend the morning at the beach.
Explore Gulf State Park in the afternoon.
Try a new restaurant for dinner.
Then come home, gather around the fire pit and figure out what tomorrow's adventure will be.
Maybe Summer Doesn't Get to Have All the Fun
There's a reason families flock to Gulf Shores every summer.
But fall offers a different version of the Alabama Gulf Coast—and we think it's one worth experiencing.
The beach is still here.
The seafood is still delicious.
The sunsets are still spectacular.
But everything feels just a little slower.
And sometimes that's exactly what you're looking for.
