Smoky Mountains in the Fall: What to Do

  • Posted on

There’s something special about fall in the Smoky Mountains. Cool mornings, colorful mountain views and evenings around the fire make September, October and early November some of our favorite times to visit Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

If you're planning a fall getaway in 2026, here are seven experiences to add to your itinerary.

1. See the Fall Colors in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The obvious choice is still one of the best. As temperatures cool, the Smokies transform into shades of yellow, orange and red.

For an easy scenic day, take a drive through Cades Cove or Newfound Gap Road and leave plenty of time for overlooks and photos. If you're visiting during peak foliage weekends, get an early start—the secret is definitely out!

2. Experience Dollywood's Harvest Festival

Dollywood goes all-in on fall.

The 2026 Harvest Festival runs September 14 through October 31 and combines live Southern gospel, country and bluegrass music with seasonal food and thousands of glowing pumpkins during Great Pumpkin LumiNights.

One of the highlights is the incredible 40-foot pumpkin tree.

New for 2026 is Harvey's Boo Bash, a separately ticketed after-hours event offered on select October nights. Families can enjoy candy stations, rides and special nighttime activities after the regular park closes.

3. Ride the New NightFlight Expedition

If you haven't visited Dollywood recently, there's another big reason to return.

NightFlight Expedition debuted in 2026 and combines an indoor family coaster with a whitewater river-raft experience for a nighttime-inspired journey through the Smokies.

It's a great addition to a Dollywood day, especially for families traveling with older kids and teenagers.

4. Spend an Evening at Anakeesta

Take the trip up the mountain and give yourself enough time to watch the sun go down.

Anakeesta has continued expanding its mountaintop experience in 2026, making this an especially good year to return if you haven't visited recently. The combination of mountain views, cooler temperatures and nighttime atmosphere makes fall a perfect time to visit.

5. Take a Fall Drive Through Cades Cove

Sometimes the best fall activity costs almost nothing.

Pack some snacks, roll down the windows and make the 11-mile loop through Cades Cove. In addition to the scenery and historic buildings, keep your eyes open for deer, turkeys, black bears and other wildlife.

Just remember: wildlife is wild. Give animals plenty of space and never approach or feed them.

6. Walk Downtown Gatlinburg

Fall evenings are perfect for exploring downtown Gatlinburg.

Grab something sweet, browse the shops, stop at an attraction or simply walk the Parkway. During peak fall weekends, walking downtown can also be a lot easier than trying to move your car from place to place.

7. End the Day at Your Cabin

After a full day exploring, sometimes the best part is coming home.

At Stay for the Adventure Vacation Homes, our Smoky Mountain properties give you two very different ways to experience the area.

Angel's Window in Gatlinburg is just minutes from downtown with an incredible view of Mt. LeConte, a private hot tub and game room.

Vistas to Behold in Pigeon Forge gives families plenty of room to spread out, two game rooms and beautiful views—including a view toward The Island—all while keeping you close to Dollywood and the area's biggest attractions.

Fall dates in the Smokies can fill quickly, especially during peak foliage season. If you've been thinking about a mountain getaway, this might be the perfect excuse to make it happen.

Come for the colors. Stay for the adventure.
